The Jaunt
by Makaya McCraven
Hailing from our hometown of Chicago, jazz drummer Makaya McCraven has been on an absolute hot streak over the past several years. He features big players like Jeff Parker throughout his breakout album, In The Moment, who plays sparse chords to allow the rest of the song to breathe with its sifting layers. As Makaya has deservedly reached a larger audience in recent years, let’s revisit some of his earlier music.
Imperial 7
by Imperial Boxmen
Our very own Imperial Boxmen also hail from Chicago, and they’re channeling the soulful sounds of 70s jazz on this tune. Since we didn’t release it as a single from their self-titled debut last summer, we wanted to give this funky song a bit more love as we ease into spring — with all of its clavichord glory.
Tombola 94
by Dina Ögon
Dina Ögon blends sounds from Turkey and Colombia to bring us soul from Swedens. Yes, their souls aren’t frozen over there and, yes, there is such a thing as Scandinavian soul music. They don’t disappoint either, bringing the groove on “Thombola 94,” sounding like Khruangbin but with more singing. And we don’t need to speak the language to get the message.
Thrive (featuring Soul Food Horns)
by Ghostnaut and Glimlip
Ghostnaut has worked with both Glimlip and Soul Food Horns more than once, but we’re sticking with “Thrive” since it feels so lifting and triumphant. His music is like hip-hop without the emcees — and we can hear the jazz and soul vibes better that way.
Bad Company
by Yazmin Lacey
This one is an introspective song but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a vibe. Her vocals and arrangement sound smokey, somewhere between Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. It’s about recognizing the devil on your shoulder, and, hey, she’s onto something with knowing our own demons.
After these five tracks, we move into the existing playlist. We hope you enjoy it!
